This shouldn't be too shocking... the concrete we use today is only 1 ingredient different from what the Romans used.-Not shocking. It is an ancient substance, and I think only recently explained. Unless I have recovered memory syndrome, I saw an article a number of years ago with a modern explanation of how it works.
