David: Quite correct, but reducing a cell to all of its operating parts and reactions doesn't tell us why it is alive. Put all the lab-reproduced parts in a lab-produced membrane and all you have is a sack of parts. There must be something beyond reductionism. But it does give us a sense of how.-So understanding that pandimensional white mice are responsible for something being alive does not tell us why either.
